Houston Residential Real Estate Pros: Doing not Saying

“Do as I say, not as I do!” is the famous line sometimes imputed to parents, but always meant to indicate that the speaker either
a) is honest (and willing to admit making plenty of mistakes); or else
b) is a hypocrite.
In that vein, for Houston Realtors® like myself, this summer’s statistical inclusion of a key “tell” about residential real estate professionals can be taken as a point of pride. Among the “Highlights from the NAR Member Profile” is one statistic that indicates that we Realtors are—by overwhelming numbers—doing rather than just saying.
The statistic under discussion was bullet-pointed under a heading dealing with the demographic characteristics of the nation’s Realtors. As a demonstration of “doing as I do,” American Realtors own their own residences: fully 89% of them do. Additionally, 43% own a secondary property as well. Also unsurprising were most of the other statistics, although one of them (“95% of Realtors reported using a smartphone daily”) might leave readers wondering how the 5% who don’t are able to function in today’s world.
On another front, the National Association found that more than 1.4 million housing starts were launched in June, which was quite a leap over the 763,000 new homes sold in May. Also, a total of 4.16 million housing units of all kinds were sold in June—fewer than the year before, but by less than a million units. That the median sales price was more than $410,000 demonstrated a market that stubbornly “held firm” near the record established a year earlier.
